A collection of paintings
from China
Rose-Marie recently returned from a painting workshop in China with Master painter, Jove Wang.
Six artists traversed the continent to remote areas including Western China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and the city of Urumqi, a major hub on the ancient Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty. Urumqi is know as the city farthest from the sea in the world.
Descending the earth's depression, Turpan is a city on the edge of the Great Gobi Desert. Desert scenes and local color of the Flaming Mountains filed the canvases. Traveling eastward to Inner Mongolia and the Great Grasslands, artists painted the vast beauty of the region. The group painted in a local family's Yurt or "Ger", meaning home. Several villagers posed for portrait paintings.
Although remote, cell services and phones were available and ancient traditions meshed with modern technology. Tractors, reapers and other farm equipment assist the people. The livestock was well cared for and cherished. Their beautiful animals including the famed Mongolian horses were donned with colorful tack, abundant sheep covered hillsides and strong, beefy cattle symbolized their wealth. Herding is now conveniently done on motorcycle.
Traveling east to Jilin, the artists the artists traveled to the far eastern reaches of the country. In Manchuria the terrain was lush with evergreens and fertile land used for Ginseng and mushroom farming. Climbing towards the North Korean border, ChangBaiShan cradled the mystical Heaven Lake within the caldera.
The area in ChangBai was reminiscent of the Swiss Alps and Alpine villages with natural healing hot springs and cascading waterfall. Gardens, ponds and nature paths landscaped the city.
"I wanted to capture the natural beauty and the rhythm of the day, using sunlight and shadows, to express the scene. When painting outdoors, one works quickly and with intention, to translate the landscape, seascape or cityscape for the viewer, expressing a moment in time."
Rose-Marie's body of work include CA coast, the mountain regions of Carmel and Big Sur, scenic areas of SW Michigan, France, Tuscany and Asia.
While in Santa Barbara, Rose-Marie won several awards for her work and was a founding member of SCAPE (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment). Proceeds from many of her art sales have gone to charities for helping the environment.
